Silent Hill

I’m not being anything for Halloween this year. I don’t really have a good excuse, but I’m just not. In the spirit of the holiday, though, here’s a picture of the Pyramid Head mask I made a few years ago.

Pyramid Head: the movie version

I followed this Youtube video where some guy explained how he made his, using a bunch of cardboard, hot glue, and spackle. I had a skateboard helmet on the inside and used material from an old screen door for the grilles over the eyes. Still, I couldn’t really see out of it and ended up bumping into stuff a lot. I later added a bit of blood to the knife and apron, but this was essentially the final product. I think it turned out pretty well, although every Halloween party that I went to involved multiple people asking either “what is that thing?” or “oh, are you that triangle guy from Silent Hill?” Pyramid, people…pyramid. I enjoyed making something myself and having it turn out awesomely, and I want to do something like that again. Just not right away. Maybe next year or something.

Silent Hill is the best, by the way. I think Silent Hill 2 is actually my favorite game that I’ve played. I think it’s really what survival horror should be: little to no ammo in most areas, a horrible combat system that actually makes you afraid of fighting monsters, and an atmosphere that’s all about making you fear going around every corner – you feel like something’s always about to pop out at you, and it rarely does. I remember playing SH2 for the first time, having played Resident Evil 4 and having essentially no idea what Silent Hill was all about. I was expecting it to be pretty similar to RE4 – an action game, essentially. And if you’ve played the game, you can probably guess what my reaction was: I was freaked the hell out. Even just that first part where you’re walking through the foggy woods got me like crazy the first time I played. Or the fact that there’s no instruction and no heads-up display – or “there was a HOLE here”…WTF is that!? Silent Hill 2 is hands down the scariest game I’ve ever played. I mean, I’ve never played Fatal Frame or Dead Space, but I’d venture a guess that SH2 is scarier, and a way better game, than both of them.

The movie is sweet too, although I’ve heard a lot of opinions to the contrary. People say it was overdone, which I think is a comment that certainly has a bit of merit. But despite it not really doing justice to the style of horror that was done so well in the games, I think it still is a good movie that deserves attention. If not for the scare factor, then at least for the sleuthing aspect.

I’m going to make a rage comic soon, because they’re funny and awesome. I don’t know what it’ll be about though. Maybe that BS with Super Mario Galaxy 2. I’m still pissed at that game.

Here’s a jack-o-lantern carved to look like one of the robotic guns from Portal. I’m more than a little bit jealous.
