New Site – too bad it’s not doabarrelroll.com

Posted on 24th March 2011 in Something Daily

You may have noticed that this isn’t threestegosaurusmoon.com anymore. That’s because it’s not, I migrated the blog to my own web host this morning, and spent the day getting the URLs moved around and the theme working properly. I say that I was working on this, but really what it amounted to was me closing my eyes and randomly clicking around until the files were all on my server. The old threestegosaurusmoon.wordpress.com site still exists, but I won’t be updating that anymore – it’s here at emmettbutler.com from now on. The one big advantage I’ve noticed so far to being on my own server is that I’m now allowed to install plugins, which means that I now have a random post button; to the right, just below the “about me” section. It’s fun!

Also, as you can see, emmettbutler.com is now a thing. If you go there at this moment, it’s just a “coming soon” image that links back to right here, but it will, within the next six to eight weeks, become a glorious and fully-functional homepage for me, where I can keep all of my drawings and music and resume and all that. So stay tuned for that. In the meantime, keep keeping it really real right here. Thanks for reading.

I’m Looking for the Fireflower

Posted on 2nd February 2011 in Something Daily

For the past few days, I’ve been acting a lot like Mario. It’s been snowy and ice-pellety and rainy, and in New York, this means that every street turns into a gross swampy mess of grey slush and ice sheets. I have to wear boots to go anywhere, and my pea coat is becoming useless as the air gets damper. I say I’ve been acting like Mario because every time I come to a sidewalk corner, I’m faced with the option to either walk around, hop over, or take a swim through the giant slushy crap puddle between myself and the crosswalk. I’ve also considered using passerby to build a human bridge, but I’m usually in a hurry – otherwise, that would probably be the best plan. Short of that, though, and seeing as I’d rather not swim to class through throwup water every morning, I’m often forced to use my incredible vertical leap to traverse the moat. Sometimes the ice dirt cocktail gets into my boots when I don’t jump far enough…then I’m just disappointed. I mean, I get over it, but it just sucks to walk to class with a wet sock, especially when that sock is soaked with the cold, wet street slime of New York City.

I just heard the mc on the Company Flow album say the line “I was the first monkey to touch the monolith”…I love albums like that, where the more that you listen to it, the more that you begin to realize that it’s secretly all about “2001: A Space Odyssey”. That’s one of the best science fiction novels I’ve ever read; probably the best actually. Second (maybe) only to “Contact” by Carl Sagan, which is still science fiction, but it’s got a lot more political intrigue. They’re both just really really good, because apart from being about SPACE (something that makes a book good in my eyes regardless of any other factor), they have the potential to really make you think about the universe in a new way. Not only the universe, but the way we think about our world and society too. Probably the biggest thing I got out of reading “Contact” last summer was that the way we do things here on Earth is certainly not the only way things could be done; I realized ease with which it’s possible to go through life without ever even questioning the status quo, not just politically, but societally as well.

Three Stegosaurus Moon is nearing the 100-post mark. That was pretty quick, but I guess that’ll happen when you write every day. I want an idea of something to do…why not help me out? Give me an idea of something interesting to write about for the 100th post. Try it out, you can type stuff into the comments under the post. Seriously, it’s fun!

An Aside About Blogging

Posted on 21st December 2010 in Something Daily

I’ve noticed that it’s really interesting for me to go back to some of the first posts I made on TSM and see how differently I approach the challenge of blogging than I did when I was starting out. You can tell, if you read the first week or so, that I really had no idea what I was doing when I started out. Every day it’s a different kind of post; usually short and singularly focused. I don’t want to give anyone the impression that I know what I’m doing (unless you want to believe that, in which case: rad), but I can at least say that I understand a little better how to write a blog than I did back in October.

It’s often challenging coming up with interesting content, especially when my modus operandi is to use my recent activities as a jumping-off point. That strategy usually works pretty well when I’ve been doing lots of interesting stuff, but there are times when that’s definitely not the case; that’s when it gets tricky to come up with content. I’m preparing for what I’m sure will be a dearth of interesting events over the January part of winter break by taking notes on things that I could write about when they occur to me – finally giving my sweet Uglydoll notebook a workout! The interesting content thing won’t really be a problem until then, with Christmas and new year’s and all that, but I’m getting ready.

So, if you’re someone who comes around here often, thanks for stopping by. And stay classy. And thanks for stopping by. Really, it means a lot to see that I get a decent number of views. And, by the way, if one day you happen to wake up and find yourself in an existential quandary, full of loathing and self-doubt, and wracked with the pain and isolation of your pitiful meaningless existence, at least you can take a small bit of comfort in knowing that somewhere out there in this crazy mixed-up internet of ours, there’s still a little place called Three Stegosaurus Moon.
